Jolof Stories from the Falémé Valley to the Lands of Teranga
Dinner, Screening, Conversation, DJ-Set

Fri., 16 May, 19:00–23:00

Tickets: 30€

This iteration of Tongue and Throat Memories, entitled Jolof Stories from the Falémé Valley to the Lands of Teranga, is an occasion to unpack and offer contemporary readings of Teranga—the traditions of hospitality from Senegal and the Senegambian region.

Dakar-based Chef Tamsir Ndir is known for his mastering of West African cuisine. In the course of his thirty-year-long career, Ndir has been a great advocate of the use of local products and spices to promote the food traditions of his grandmothers’ generation. He has brought culinary knowledge from his hometown in Saint Louis, in north-west Senegal, to top-rated restaurants in Dakar, Abidjan, Paris, Montréal, and beyond.

Historian and anthropologist Abdourahmane Seck, Chef Tamsir Ndir, fashion designer Khadija Aisha Ba L’Artisane, and HKW curator Marie Helene Pereira engage in a conversation on Teranga and the principles of reciprocity, followed by a curated dinner with Tamsir Ndir und Khadija Aisha Ba L’Artisane.

Heimatization: Disintegration.

Against Jewish Tokenism

An Evening in Memory of Y. Michal Bodemann
Thur., 8 May, 19:00

DE, EN, DGS

Tickets: 5€

Keine Juden* mehr für Deutsche! (No more Jews for Germans!). This was one of the slogans of the Disintegration Congress, which took place at the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin in May 2016. The initiators questioned the staging of German reparations in the culture of remembrance and wanted to prevent Jews from being functionalized. Nine years later, Disintegration: Against Jewish Tokenism is once again dedicated to this approach and asks about the state of affairs between anti-Semitism and self-determination. Political consultant Benjamin Fischer, social pedagogue and social scientist Anastassia Pletoukhina, and Mirjam Wenzel, Director of the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, discuss these issues with the hosts of the series Max Czollek and Ibou Diop.

The evening takes place in memory of Y. Michal Bodemann. The sociologist provided central impulses for the concept of disintegration with his book Gedächtnistheater. Die jüdische Gemeinschaft und ihre deutsche Erfindung (1996).

AI (Ancestral Immediacies): The Collective Brain

Lectures, Conversations, Performances, DJ-Set, Installation

Fri., 30.–Sat., 31 May

Free entry

Taking as its starting point the interface of AI and neuroscience, AI (Ancestral Immediacies): The Collective Brain explores technology and the brain as perceived sites of consciousness, intelligence, and subjectivity. The programme considers how such notions, which typically emphasize the brain’s separation from the body, have influenced the development of computational architectures that assert individualism and separability. Expanding this view of the brain to include recent trends in computation—such as using the behaviour of slime moulds and fungi to solve problems—the programme asks what other concepts of the brain exist and have existed, and how they might inform social ideas of intelligence in more collective ways.

With contributions by Lewis Gordon, Chien-hung Huang, Ida Momennejad, Iz A. Nettere, Interspecifics, Ymoirá Micall, Vanessa Ramos-Velasquez

In advance of the festival, the programme features a workshop for school classes, Mycelium, Human, Machine—AI in the Undergrowth, and a teacher training, Artificial Intelligence and School.

Musafiri: Of Travellers and Guests
Exhibition

Until 16 June

Tickets: 8€/6€, free entry on Mondays

In many languages, the word musafiri oscillates between the meanings of ‘traveller’ and ‘guest’ and thus touches on the question of who is welcome and who is not. The exhibition is dedicated to travellers, their stories and encounters, and the worlds they open up. It bears witness to the necessity of a society in which travellers can arrive and be received as welcome guests.

In May, guided tours and a cartography workshop give insights into the themes of the exhibition.
