into the unfathomable pearl (tungo sa di-abot-diling perlas) is a long night of programming at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) centring queer ancestry, its historical absence, and the possibilities it opens for connection. The programme borrows its title from a line of HIYAS (GEMS), a work by Filipina poet Jaya Jacobo, that is now online on HKW's website. Building upon these thoughts, the night further grounds queerness by echoing the qualities of a pearl: a defence mechanism, a scar, a way of connecting the inner and outer, a precious form of beauty.

Forough Farrokhzad Garden

HKW’s building has long been known to many Berliners as the ‘pregnant oyster’—taking this into consideration, Joshua Serafin’s performance VOID premieres in Germany as a way of activating associations with this expectant mollusc.

22:00
Ladyboys United
Short film programme, with a conversation with Ragil Huda (in English)
Safi Faye Hall

The last part of the evening, a short film programme entitled Ladyboys United, opens up space to highlight the particularities of South East Asia queer sociality. Short films explore how fluid sociality disrupts heteronormative structures—from contemporary speculation on precolonial Babaylan shamans to norm-defying partnerships in Myanmar and a (neo)colonial camp take on the civilization of Siam.

Barely out of prison, Léa returns to Sol Nascente in Brasília, one of the largest favelas in Latin America. She joins her sister Chitara, who, together with her all-woman gang, steals oil from underground pipelines, refining it and selling it to a secret network of motorcyclists. Depicting protests, singing, and dancing at the real locations, but always under the strong influence of genre cinema, Mato seco em chamas is a post-apocalyptic film that artfully weaves its way between science fiction, heist film, and queer western.
