Pedagogies of Travesti Liberation is a transformative work that unpacks the intricate relationship between education, identity, and the socio-political movements surrounding Brazil’s travesti community. Through a series of chapters, the book highlights travesti-centred pedagogical frameworks that challenge traditional educational paradigms and advocate for visibility, empowerment, and joy of marginalized identities. HKW publishes revised English and German translations of this seminal book from 2022 as the first publications in the context of School of Quilombismo.
On the occasion of the publications’ launch at HKW, Maria Clara Araújo dos Passos joins a conversation with a round of guests and the audience. What can European democracies learn from the Brazilian travesti struggle? With which strategies can education lead to gender euphoria? By combining a historical approach on travesti liberation in Brazil with insights into the academic career of the author, the ensuing discussion highlights interlinkages with and differences to German discourses on trans* realities. Their exchanges also illuminate upon the moments of euphoria that result from moving towards self-determined gender identities.
