In Burundi, a group of escaped coltan miners form an anti-colonial hacker collective with one declared aim in mind: to overthrow the exploitative regime. An intersex runaway and a miner find their way to each other by means of cosmic powers—a contact that results in a disruption to the more-than-human cycle. In lyrical hymns and songs, which alternate between Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Swahili, English, and French, the film questions sexual and cultural identity, western hegemony, reality, and the past and present. Neptune Frost is an Afrofuturist masterpiece, a musical plea for a future in which technology is used for liberatory political and social purposes.
