What role does technology play in the re-emergence of global fascisms? At many levels, the involvement of tech and tech companies—and those who have profited from or inspired them—seem central: from social media algorithms designed to create agitated clusters of comforting rage to dreams of substituting almost all workers with AI; from dark enlightenment ‘gurus’ debating how best to dispose of the unwanted 99% to open calls for the destruction of democratic systems. What does seem different this time is that the focus is on escape; rather than building mass movements, the goal is to separate and flee a dying planet in the name of freedom. This lecture unpacks the various links between tech and global fascism, paying particular attention to how current machine learning algorithms ‘train’ those who use them and shape the world. It asks: to what extent do existing technical systems and logics drive global fascisms?
