Miriam Makeba Auditorium
€ 24/20
With a soft voice, guitar, and atabaque, in his songs Mateus Aleluia tells of life, nature, and the gods. Aleluia brought African heritage to música popular brasileira when he became well known in Brazil in the 1960s with his band Os Tincoas. For twenty years, he remained out of the limelight, living in Angola where he dedicated himself to cultural politics, education, and research. In 2002, he returned to Brazil and the stage. Now he celebrates his eightieth birthday and the sixtieth anniversary of his first stage performance with the concert evening Deep Bahia. He appears at HKW with his daughter Fabiana Aleluia on piano, accompanied by a percussionist.

Angélique Kidjo
Friday, 24.11.2023, 20:00
Miriam Makeba Auditorium
€ 55/50
Angélique Kidjo’s music embraces a wide spectrum of rhythms from the African musical legacy such as Congolese rumba, Nigerian highlife, West African funk, and Cameroonian makossa. Alongside this she combines her interest in tracing African roots in Jamaican reggae, zouk, guaguancó and descarga from the Caribbean, rock, blues and soul from North America, and samba from Brazil. With her timeless understanding of genres, energetic performances, and innovative productions, Kidjo’s music unfolds an array of sonic cultures and languages creating a unique space, from vintage to afrofuturism, from poetry to melody, from Benin to the world, back and forth. Kidjo is indeed not only one of the most important artists of her home country but also a key figure of international African music.
More Information
Congorama
Congorama combines concerts, DJ sets, workshops, listening sessions and music festivals. The series is oriented on three locations in the world which carry the word “Congo” in their name: the Congo River, Congo Mirador, a village in northern Venezuela, as well as Congo Square in New Orleans. Separated by great geographical distances, all three locations are blessed with incomparable sonic and cultural riches and share many things in common which spring from their violent colonial past. Congorama invites the public to engage with the sonic knowledge and history of these geographies and experience how sound can generate and connect different worlds.
