A Participatory Planet: On 21 March, the focus will be on the knowledge of plants and alternatives to capitalist growth

14.3.2024

Following the kick-off in November 2023, the event series A Participatory Planet—Relational Paths Towards Environmental Justice will enter its second phase on 21 March—Growing

On the evening of the zoroastrian New Year, HKW celebrates the social intelligence of plants and the relationships plants have to localized struggles for liberation and a more just existence for human and non-human life under the title GROWING. What knowledge does the plant world preserve?  Can the fight for biodiversity connect to social struggles concerning notions of belonging? And can we reorient the question of growth away from capital and towards social, cultural, and land-based needs?

The beginning of the new year in the Zoroastrian calendar on 21 March symbolises growth and fertility. On this evening, the seed is taken as a starting point to share knowledge on ancestral plants, sustainable agricultural development, and share stories on how they have supported bottom-up movements across the world in a panel discussion. As a celebration of the ongoing survival and growth of communities even under oppression, the evening will culminate in a musical celebration of resistance with a concert by Hani and the Moon and a DJ set by DJ Barış.

A Participatory Planet

A Participatory Planet is a two-tier project consisting of public performative and discursive programming as well as a workshop and public learning programme. The workshop programme invites practitioners and experts from Germany and the world to meet and explore core questions concerning global environmental justice and liveable planetary relations for all.

What to do with a world whose environmental conditions as we know them seem close to collapse? A Participatory Planet takes as its starting point that a planet which participates in sustaining all types of life, human and non-human alike, is also active in constructing liveable spaces in relation to and in concert with the earth.
The series thus builds on a longstanding engagement of the House with questions of the relationship between human and non-human actors in fragile ecosystems.

This series moves along four interconnected phases: Unearthing, Growing, Consuming, Discarding.
