If everyone who lived in the future had a handle on everything about the past, what would we need stories for?
—Sharon Dodua Otoo, from Mahlerstrasse 8
A nameless narrator embarks on a journey into a past that seems strangely present. She feels the urge to meet the unknown inhabitant of the house in Berlin-Grunewald that Lion Feuchtwanger was forced to leave in 1933 after the National Socialists seized power and to which the writer never returned.
Mahlerstrasse 8 is the fourth volume in the 'haɪ̯maːtn̩ publication series, which understands the German term Heimat (home/homeland) in the plural and as a verb. It is published by Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in collaboration with Merve Verlag.
