For centuries, poetry has been a source of healing. In the Somali context, this tradition is embodied in the act of sitaad, which is still alive and practiced in Somaliland. Sitaad is a traditional Somali women’s gathering that centres around the chanting of poetry, accompanied by singing, drumming, and clapping, often led by elder women. These deeply spiritual chants are essential to Sitaad, providing a way for participants to express their faith and connect with Islamic teachings. Over time, these poetic chants evolved into structured sessions, educating and inspiring different generations of Somali women. Today, Sitaad remains an empowering space for women to connect, share their struggles, and seek spiritual guidance. Despite facing criticism and undervaluation by patriarchal ideologies, particularly with the rise of extremist movements since the early 1990s, Sitaad continues to be a vital platform for empowerment and socialization. In this intervention, Muna Ahmed explores into the history of Sitaad, while Amina Jama recites her poetry, rediscovering the soothing power of verse.
