Based on Mei Liu’s three-year artistic research, the lecture performance Homesick for Another World takes the audience into the dark, vast, and unmappable world of lucid dreaming. In Liu’s semi-fictional narrative, the dreaming state emerges in response to oppressive political systems, physical confinement, various forms of immobility, and the desire for freedom. Through different characters and stories, the lecture travels across worlds—weaving together dreams, dark socio-political realities, cognitive neurology, and Daoist internal cosmologies. In doing so, Liu asks how darkness and despair might offer alternative imaginaries for solidarity and resistance.
