Artist Sergio Zevallos initiates two reading sessions as collective moments to study and discuss seminal texts that were published in the anti-colonial magazine Sociedad y Política (1972–1983, Lima, Peru). The body of discourse introduced by this publication is the point of departure for Zevallos’s new commissions in the exhibition. By analysing the authority of modern power as that which informs the combined crises of capitalism, patriarchy, ecology, and eurocentrism, Sociedad y Política crafted a perspective from the South to contest the ‘coloniality of power’. The magazine was directed by decolonial thinker Aníbal Quijano in Peru and co-edited by the artist’s father Abraham Zevallos, among others. Thus, the discussions of the Reading Group are motivated by the personal and the political, affection and theoretical analysis, and inter-generational dialogue.
