Since its first edition in 2008 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), the AFRIKAMERA – AKTUELLES KINO AUS AFRIKA film festival has been held annually at different locations in Berlin, presenting African filmmakers’ cinematic perspectives on key social and political issues affecting the present and future of the continent.

This year’s CHANGE programme focuses on films that address traditional gender roles and their structural and social implications, questioning existing power relations and established norms. The emphasis is on films by female and female-identifying directors.

In addition, there are current productions from the African continent to discover, which premiered at major international festivals and have won awards.

AFRIKAMERA 2025 celebrates the end of this year's festival at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt with Ancestral Visions of the Future (France/Lesotho/Germany/Qatar/Saudi Arabia 2025) by Lesotho-born filmmaker and visual artist Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese, who lives and works in Berlin.

In his poetical masterpiece Mosese reflects on personal experiences of uprootedness and belonging through fragmented narratives and mythical images—a meditation on his childhood and adolescence in Lesotho until his exile. Inspired by oral histories, Ancestral Visions of the Future is a poetical autobiography, which unfolds in spirals and loops. A recurring image of blood-red fabric weaves together memories of war, childhood, and encounters with a series of mythical figures, including a street puppeteer, a martial artist, and, last but not least, his mother.

Following the film screening, a pre-recorded conversation between the director and Ibou Diop is shown.

The AFRIKAMERA programme, featuring over 20 screenings, talks, and networking events, will take place from 11 to 16 November 2025 at seven venues throughout Berlin. For more information, visit www.afrikamera.de
