Departing from the artworks of Santos Chávez in the exhibition Echos der Bruderländer, an emblematic Mapuche artist who settled in the GDR in self-exile from Chile, researcher and curator Cristian Vargas Paillahueque contextualizes Chávez’s work and offers an historical account of the contemporary artistic production from the perspective of Mapuche people. In this talk, Vargas Paillahueque addresses different moments of cultural decolonization in Latin America through the practice of Mapuche artists and poets, and the paths they opened through various struggles, resistances, and correlations.
