Rubem Valentim (1922, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil–1991, São Paulo, Brazil) was a painter whose work combines several sources that are part of the Brazilian cultural legacy: popular traditions from the ceramic production of the Northeast, modernist propositions from the Southeast, and the idea of cultural anthropophagy. His work has been exhibited extensively since the early 1950s. In 2018, MASP presented a major retrospective of his work. He is represented in collections including: MoMA, New York; Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo; Tate Modern, London; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo; Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro; Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia; Museu de Arte de Brasília; Museu Afro Brasil, São Paulo; and Gem Houston.
