Elke Shoghig Hartmann
Elke Shoghig Hartmann is a professor and head of the Institute for Ottoman Studies and Turkology at Freie Universität Berlin. Prior to her current position, she worked as a visiting professor and research fellow at several universities, among others in Berlin, Munich and Budapest. Her research focuses on modern state and nation-building, as well as the military and history of violence in the Ottoman Empire, with a regional focus on the eastern provinces, comparative imperial studies, and Ottoman-Turkish and Armenian personal accounts. In 2010, together with Vahé Tachjian she founded houshamadyan, a project to reconstruct Ottoman Armenian town and village life.
