Fela Kuti (1938–1997) was a brilliant musical visionary and activist against colonialism and Nigeria’s military government. His lyrics and political album covers, mainly designed by the then very young graphic artist Lemi Ghariokwu, questioned colonial thought patterns and developed the idea of a self-confident Pan-Africanism. Influenced by the US civil rights movement and the Black Panthers, Fela Kuti’s music, lyrics, and the provocative political imagery of his covers became the musical force that continues to influence numerous artists today. In her lecture at this year’s Felasophical Gathering, art and music journalist Maxi Broecking presents a selection of Fela Kuti’s iconic album covers.
