35 mm Persia

A 3-day film festival on the history and archaeology of Iran in film, followed by a colloquium.

Wed, Oct 19, 2005
Free admission

In Iran over the last few decades, a distinctive way of filming documentaries has developed which clearly differs from film traditions in the West. Archaeological sites are seen as a constant for depicting the development of films and their interpretation by Iranian and European film directors. A comparison between European and Iranian films on this subject will not only be critically examined but also discussed in depth.

Different aspects of presenting archaeology are investigated from various points of view. The question arises as to how these portrayals can be used as a projection for one's own dreams or as a model for historical identification

Colloquium

Images of reality? The creation of identities in archaeological films.

The depiction of archaeological reality on film is far more than just classifying found objects and their excavation, for at the same time it offers a screen for various levels of interpretation. In this way, pictures of the past are conjured up that are, or become, part of a personal or cultural identity. How are such pictures evoked, interpreted but also used as an instrument? Of foremost importance in discussing these questions is not only archaeological works themselves but also their adaptation to film and the associations they produce. In this colloquium, the creation of traditions particularly in archaeological films, will be analysed and discussed both at a theoretical and philosophical level.
