35 mm Persia

A 3-day film festival on the history and archaeology of Iran in film, followed by a colloquium.

Tue, Oct 18, 2005
Free admission

In Iran over the last few decades, a distinctive way of filming documentaries has developed which clearly differs from film traditions in the West. Archaeological sites are seen as a constant for depicting the development of films and their interpretation by Iranian and European film directors. A comparison between European and Iranian films on this subject will not only be critically examined but also discussed in depth.

Different aspects of presenting archaeology are investigated from various points of view. The question arises as to how these portrayals can be used as a projection for one's own dreams or as a model for historical identification.

Programme 2

Archaeology personified

Archaeology is personified by the excavator. In European film productions, his work is frequently shown as that of a pseudo adventurer- shades of Indiana Jones! Iranian film producers have developed a far more personal approach to this science and its scholars.

Towards east

When journeying to the unknown Orient, travellers in the twenties of the last century not only moved to a different place but also to a different time. Driven by the yearning for distant places and with a profound curiosity, their films reflect the encounter with foreign customs and ideas. Up until the present day, the popular idea of archaeology = adventure has been influenced by this period and its travellers. Let yourself be captured by the power of these images.
