In the seven-member band Mexrrissey musicians from some of the Mexico’s best-known formations have teamed up – including from Café Tacuba and Mexican Institute of Sound. Together they Mexicanize the entire album The Queen Is Dead and other songs by The Smiths and Morrissey – of course with texts in Spanish. The melancholy boy from Manchester and mariachi trumpets, does that even go together? Very well, in fact, linking up a penchant for stirring romanticism and melodrama with a bleeding heart.

Anushka

Night meets day: Anushka from the time-honored seaside resort of Brighton produces a mix of soul singing and clattering garage-house, as can only be found in the United Kingdom. The music by the beat maker Max Wheeler and the singer Victoria Port is as raw as it is polished –melodies from a sun-drenched café meet beats from a sweaty basement club dance floor. Wheeler and Port themselves simply call their music “Sound System Songs”.
