In this lecture, writer and journalist Christian Eboulé presents the untold story of Charles N'Tchoréré, the only Black African captain in the French army during the Second World War. Born in Gabon, Captain N'Tchoréré had an exceptional military career. He died fighting for France on 7 June 1940 in Airaines, Hauts-de-France, after being shot by German soldiers. In many ways, N'Tchoréré’s trajectory symbolizes the fate of African soldiers during the twentieth century’s two World Wars. Telling his story individualizes the history of the Tirailleurs sénégalais, which is often rendered invisible or lost amid the rigidity and simplicity of national histories.
