Marseille, the city between Europe and Africa, is home to the duo Zine & Siroko—Trance Ritual (B2B). On the one hand, DJ, singer, and multi-instrumentalist Anass Zine, who merges Afro-Maghreb rhythms and singing with electronic music. The project he cofounded, Zar Electrik, brings together Gnawa singing, guembri, oud, and electronic textures. The name refers to zār, a ritual of trance and liberation from Egypt, Ethiopia, and the Horn of Africa that is part of the same ritual field as the Gnawa lila. And on the other, DJ, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Siroko, whose organic tech-house draws on Gnawa, Amzigh, and Afro-Maghreb traditions. As Zine & Siroko—Trance Ritual (B2B), they take us on an immersive journey through hypnotic rhythms, organic basslines, and Afro-Oriental influences, as their set travels the line that defines the festival: between the Maghreb, sub-Saharan sounds and western electronics, between guembri and modular synths, between invocations and club beats.
