Kawtar Sadik (born in Agadir, lives and works in Casablanca) is one of the few Moroccan women to have succeeded in the country’s male-dominated DJ scene. She is a singer, songwriter, producer, and DJ in one—a profile that is rare in Morocco and which she herself attributes to the lineage of her generation: the voice of a young Morocco that does not reject tradition to be modern, instead combining the two. Since winning the ‘Studio 2M’ casting show in 2013, she has played Visa for Music in Rabat, the Amsterdam Dance Event, and the opening of the FIFA Club World Cup in Tangier. Her sound draws on old Moroccan songs, taking them into electronic realms—rock, rap, Arabic and Amazigh vocals, house, all in one voice and one set. Scheduling her performance during a weekend featuring only female acts—when the festival also celebrates musical pioneers Asmaa Hamzaoui and Yousra Mansour—is a deliberate gesture: three young Moroccan women, with three very different sonic universes, each insisting on her own distinctive voice.
