Time to Listen 2024 is a listening session hosted by Elsa M’bala in which she plays a selection of cassettes from the Ass Niang Collection. The collection consists of over 5,000 cassettes spanning six decades and genres such as rumba, highlife, Mbalax, Makossa, and more. The variety of sounds and their origin stories the collection encompasses is vast, reflecting a sonic treasure that has shaped African storytelling since the 1960s. In the session, music is presented without categorization, inviting listeners to engage and connect with one another, potentially discovering shared experiences amidst existing inequalities. By encountering diverse soundscapes, listeners can deepen their understanding of music as a whole and gain a better appreciation of the perspectives of the ‘other’.
