on Gaborone, 1985 (2021) considers the raid on Gaborone by the South African Defence Force (SADF) that took place on 14 June 1987 as a traumatic turning point in Botswana’s creative development. The 2024 sound installation commissioned for  Listening to the World at HKW re-/unwinds the storytelling of this political event, dealing with themes of transnational identity, historical entanglements, and the archive as living. By unfolding this material soundscape through this symbolic installation, visitors experience a layered soundscape that unravels these narratives, encouraging a way of listening that is interconnected—reflecting Kim Karabo Makin's experience of navigating the complexities of contemporary life in Botswana.
