Mary L. Pratt is a theorist of Latin American studies and language rights and emeritus professor at New York University. She has written extensively about cultural productions including Imperial Eyes: Travel Writing and Transculturation (1992), which has become a key text about cultural encounters in the Americas and beyond. Pratt has been a vocal advocate for bi- and multilingual education as a necessary literacy for the 21st century. Pratt lives and works in New York City.
