Bidou Yamaguchi is an artist whose practice focuses on Noh mask-making and the exploration of Yūgen. As a central aesthetic concept in Noh, Yūgen designates a liminal realm between this world and the other. Building on this principle, Yamaguchi has developed the ‘Western Painting Series’ creating masks that engage with Western art historical contexts. Recent activities include lectures, performances, and exhibitions at galleries, universities, and museums internationally. His works are held in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Rijksmuseum, and many more. Yamaguchi is based in Japan.
