Banda Comunale is a diverse collective of musicians from Dresden who play Afrofunk, klezmer, cumbia, Balkan, and Asian sounds to combat racism and exclusion. It was founded in 2001 as a protest band against Nazi marches. Refugee musicians have been part of the group since 2015. The ensemble has given over 600 concerts, including at the WDR Cosmo Festival, received numerous awards such as the German World Music promotion prize, produced several albums and initiated educational projects in Saxony. Banda Comunale plays concerts throughout Germany and deliberately also in cities known for right-wing extremist incidents.
