Anna Maria Maiolino
Anna Maria Maiolino (1942, Scalea) is one of the most significant artists working in Brazil. Her practice spans drawing, printmaking, poetry, film, performance, installation, and sculpture, exploring subjectivity through fragmentation, repetition, and daily gestures. Informed by migration from post-war Italy to South America, her work engages questions of identity, language, and desire. In the 1960s she was part of New Figuration and New Objectivity, participating in the landmark 1967 exhibition New Brazilian Objectivity. Since the 1980s, her use of malleable materials reflects unconscious gestures and bodily processes. Maiolino lives and works in São Paulo.
