With Malian star Oumou Sangaré, West African music comes into focus—a kaleidoscope of many genres using percussion, polyrhythms, traditional instruments, and modern sounds with resonance in different parts of the Americas in the form of boogie, makossa, funk, samba, zouk, and more. The singer’s album Moussolou sold more than 250 thousand copies in its first 1991 edition alone, and today some of her songs are considered hymns far beyond the African continent. Sangaré, who has collaborated with global pop stars like Beyoncé and Aya Nakamura, presents a unique show which blends Wassoulou tradition with modern instrumentation from a feminist and socially-engaged perspective.
