As Sésé Niyabja firmly points to in her artistic practice, bèlè dance transcends mere movement, embodying a philosophy rooted in ancestral wisdom and collective identity. Originating from Martinique, bèlè is a profound expression of the interconnectedness between body, community, and spirit. Each step, guided by the rhythm of the drums, reflects a deep understanding of one’s physicality and emotions. As dancers engage with the sonic movements, they access forms of bodily knowledge that foster healing, letting go, and empowerment. Mètkow: Chajé—Déchajé is designed to introduce visitors to Martinique’s bèlè tradition while creating an immersive ceremonial experience. This movement lecture invites participants to experience the dynamic energy of bèlè, where community, expression, and healing converge into a powerful celebration. The lecture culminates in a live performance in which the artist embodies the essence of bèlè through dance, sound, and storytelling. Niyabja welcomes those attending into a sacred circle set to the rhythm of the bèlè drum and the breath of the konk de lambi shell instrument.
