A Kunqu performance by Ke Jun (Nanjing)

Première / production commissioned by the House of World Cultures

Ke Jun, Cang Yu Ben - Hiding and Running, Copyright: Dirk Bleicker

Ke Jun is internationally known as a soloist of classical Kun Opera, now declared part of UNESCO’s world cultural heritage. In contrast to this opulent tradition, he seeks his point of departure in calligraphy, where (according to Ke Jun) the processes of communication between the ego and society concentrate. To express this, he finds an abstract form of Kun Opera, whose sternness forms a suspense-filled contrast to the soft tones of the bamboo flutes.

The performance will be accompanied by soloists playing traditional instruments in the Kunqu style and by the orchestra of the Shanghai Theatre Academy.
