In 1936, after seven years of work, Dobycin published his novel about a childhood in a small Russian town remote from political change. He was subsequently named an enemy of the people and disappeared without a trace. Peter Urban has produced a new translation of the novel which emphasises the "deviations" that had been condemned by Stalin’s cultural bureaucrats.
