The films in the Trans-Borders section of the programme tell of the many frontier crossings immigrants make before finally reaching their new home. In New York, the traditions and views these immigrants bring with them undergo a transformation. It is the collective result of this process that gives the city its polyphonic fascination.

Night on Earth

D: Jim Jarmush, USA 1991, 129 min, German subtitles

“Life doesn't have a plot,” Jim Jarmush likes to say. This episodic film follows a series of nocturnal encounters between taxi drivers and their fares in five cities around the world. Armin Müller-Stahl plays the role of Helmut, a.k.a. Helmet, in New York. Jarmush creates reserved yet compassionate views of bizarrely humorous situations.
