Sudoeste (Southwest)

Brazil 2011, 128 min, English subtitles

In a remote fishing village, Clarice dies giving birth and only her daughter’s life can be saved. She appears to relive her entire life through her – in the course of a single day. It’s a dreamlike film: powerful black-and-white images, mysterious sounds and silent scenes soothe the heartbeat and stimulate the senses. We get glimpses of the poetry of Tarkowski or Bela Tarr. Shot in the Região dos Lagos near Rio, one of the most beautiful coastal regions in the country.
