Aharon Appelfeld, born in 1932 in Czernowitz, tells the story of his life. In his moral portrait of Jews and Christians living together in the Bukovina from the start of the 20th Century until the Nazi era, Appelfeld follows the path of suffering of the young Ukrainian Katerina, whose fate is to be one of the chroniclers of history.
