In Mutluluk, Livaneli brings together three fates that could not be more different: a liberal professor from Istanbul, who is shaken by a midlife crisis; a traumatised soldier; and a girl, who lost her honour when she was raped … The musician, composer, writer and film-maker, who was born in Konya in 1946, was forced to emigrate in the 1970s. He did not return until 1984. He soon became a member of the Turkish parliament for a few years. Livaneli pleaded above all for reconciliation with Greece, pointing the way with a joint concert with Mikis Theodorakis. His fellow countryman Orhan Pamuk says: ‘Livaneli is an indispensable authority in Turkey’s cultural and political scene’.

Music: Singer Joycelyn B. Smith and pianist Henning Schmiedt interpret songs by Zülfü Livaneli.
