Pop stars are media phenomena. Sound and storage media, the radio, television and cinema, as well as magazines and the Internet, are all media through which we hear, see and perceive pop stars. In a radio broadcast, music and media students (from the Humboldt University Berlin) will be taking a look at the pop-music communications structures that have served as media platforms for pop stars ever since the 1950s. Themes include superstars, anti-stars, star-casting, branding and fandom.

The radio contributions present the results of the seminar ‘Media Stars – Pop Music Personalities from Broadcasting to Branding’ held by Sara Ackermann and Stefanie Kiwi Menrath during the 2008 summer semester at the Humboldt University, Berlin.
