Apparitions

Berlin Apparitions—Akinbode Akinbiyi, Bom Retiro IV, São Paulo. Photo: Bienal de São Paulo and WAVA
Apparitions began with the 36th Bienal de São Paulo, extending the exhibition to the public space beyond the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion. Developed together with WAVA, a non-profit platform for site-specific augmented exhibitions, Apparitions brought digital doubles, fragments, and extensions of the Bienal artworks into other locations and contexts around the world.
As the 36th edition of the Bienal moves through its travelling exhibitions programme, Apparitions evolves alongside it. Complementing the Berlin edition, Not All Travellers Walk Roads—Of Humanity as Practice, the Apparitions are gathered around the main exhibition at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), entering into dialogue with Berlin’s landscapes, histories, and communities.
Works by Adama Delphine Fawundu, Adjani Okpu‑Egbe, Akinbode Akinbiyi, Andrew Roberts, Camille Turner, Cevdet Erek, Cici Wu with Yuan Yuan, Hamedine Kane, Juliana dos Santos, Lidia Lisbôa, Maxwell Alexandre, Michele Ciacciofera, Ming Smith, Ruth Ige, Theo Eshetu, and Vilanismo appear in the Tiergarten, around HKW, the nearby government district, and in several other public spaces across the city.
