Toyomitsu Higa is one of the most influential photographers documenting Okinawan society and culture. He has devoted his practice to recording Okinawa’s rituals, landscapes, and everyday life, revealing the cultural and spiritual layers embedded in local communities. His work also addresses war memory, language, and the transmission of cultural knowledge, often engaging with Okinawan languages like Shimakutuba as living carriers of memory. Higa is also the founder of the critical journal N27, a platform reflecting on Okinawa’s history and society. In this project, his work brings a profound visual perspective on Okinawan memory, ritual, and lived history.
