Nanyō Unten
Nanyō Unten is a calligrapher whose work explores how writing embodies the memory of land, history, and cultural continuity. Trained in Chinese literature and modern Japanese calligraphy, she has developed a distinctive practice that extends beyond exhibition into the restoration and preservation of historically significant inscriptions and monuments across Okinawa. Her work engages deeply with the spirit of Bankoku Shinryō—the Ryukyuan idea of building bridges between cultures—which continues to shape her artistic and educational activities. Through decades of teaching and public practice, she has transmitted calligraphy to younger generations. Unten is based in Okinawa, Japan.
