Serra Pelada, the naked mountain. Here, between 1980 and 1986, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, 115,000 men washed nearly 100 tons of gold out of the ground and carried a 150-meter-high mountain away on their backs. It is now the site of a lake 140 meters deep, surrounded by misery, conflict, and tales of opportunities squandered. Victor Lopes documents this legendary gold rush in scenes of almost biblical proportion. A saga of probably the greatest concentration of sheer manpower since the construction of the Egyptian pyramids.
