Cuba, An African Odyssey
D: Jihan El-Tahri
France 2007, 120 min. English subtitles, Introduction by Jihan El-Tahri (in English)
From Che Guevara’s 1965 attempt to export Cuban revolutionary practices to the Congo, through the end of apartheid in South Africa, over 300,000 Cubans supported African liberation movements. Using rare archive material and interviews, El-Tahri reconstructs Cuba’s “African Odyssey.” The film also portrays a number of the leading revolutionaries in Africa who were at the center of events when, with the war, Western Europe’s direct political hegemony in Africa was brought to an end: Kwame Nkrumah, Sekou Touré, Agostinho Neto, Samora Machel and Amilcar Cabral.
