The Goddess of 1967

Australia 2000, 119 min., German and French subtitles

The main characters in this multiple-award-winning, ocean-spanning road movie are an eccentric, attractive Japanese man, a 17-year-old Australian girl, and a pink 1967 Citroën DS – in French, “déesse,” or goddess. This underscores the Japanese man’s desire for the car, for which he makes the trip to Australia. But instead of the seller, he finds a blind girl… Under the (headlight) eyes of the goddess, the two embark on a strange journey that leads them sensitively into their respective pasts and futures. The International Herald Tribune praised the film as “outstandingly original” with “excellent acting.”
