GLOBAL INTERPLAY is the name of an intercultural composition workshop that was initiated in June 2005 as part of the preparations for the World New Music Festival to take place in July 2006 in Stuttgart. As the most central component of the festival, GLOBAL INTERPLAY is addressed at young composers from five cultural realms with greatly differing musical traditions - African, European, Arabian, American and Chinese.

From June 2005 through July 2006 4-8 participants at a time will meet in Accra (Ghana), Berlin, Cairo, New York and Beijing/Shanghai. They will be supervised by mentors who are themselves commuters between different cultures; they will attend composition lessons, learn more about their own cultural roots as well as those of their partner teams, and will learn how to employ the various medial tools of contemporary composition. At the same time they will enter into a dialogue with their colleagues from the other teams, discussing, apart from specifically composition-related techniques, the subjects of intercultural exchange and cultural identity.

Climax of this discourse will be five conventions in the participating cities, inviting delegates from all teams, to give the young composers the opportunity to also establish personal relations. In conclusion of this intercultural “interplay” there will be a composition competition and the winning projects will be performed at the World New Music Festival 2006 in Stuttgart.

The Berlin team are: Taner Akyol, Nils Günther, Adrian Koye, Sarah Memstov, Yoav Pasovsky, Tom Rojo Poller, Marc Sabat

Mentor and team leader in Berlin: Prof. Walter Zimmermann

Following the conventions in Accra (18/19 January 2006) and Cairo in February 2006, there will a convention on “Intonation and Transformation” from 14-17 March, to be opened with a participants’ concert on 14 March at Konzertsaal der UdK Berlin and to be concluded with a panel discussion at Haus der Berliner Festspiele on “Composing in an Intercultural Dialogue”, presented by Walter Zimmermann.
