D: Merata Mita, Leon Narbey, Gerd Pohlmann

New Zealand 1980, 26 min, English subtitles

The peaceful occupation of the coastal region of Bastion Point was a watershed for the Maori protest movement during its long-standing land dispute with the New Zealand government. This is Mita’s stirring record of the protesters’ forced removal by the police and army.

R: Alanis Obomsawin

Canada 1986, 29 Min, OF

At the age of 17 Richard was found in his foster parent's garden with a noose around his neck. He had passed through 28 foster homes where he had been abused and neglected. Preserved in his diary, Richard's story has helped to change public perceptions of the politically charged conflict surrounding Canada’s 'Stolen Generations'.

With their ancient knowledge, traditional healers play a vital role in Aboriginal communities. This film follows three Ngangkari as they go about their impressive work, and shows how traditional methods can complement Western medical practices.
