Nelson Pereira dos Santos, Cacá Diegues, Leon Hirszman, Walter Lima Jr – many well-known Brazilian directors who were involved in the development of Cinema Novo have also adapted literary material for their films. Indeed, one could go so far as to argue that the entire Cinema Novo movement was structurally related to literature: after all, literature continues to function as a rediscovery and means of “nation-building” in Brazil. Hence it can also serve as a basis for cinematic reflections which contribute to the construction of Brazilian identities.
