Moombahton is a “Digital Native” – a child of the sound cloud era uncoupled from local traditions and social contexts. This hybrid genre was born at a private party, when DJ Dave Nada had to combine the musical preferences of his guests (Reggaeton and Bachata) with his own (heavily influenced by Electro-House). The result was a chimera of bass-heavy Reggaeton grooves and the rhythm of the House track “Moombah” (Silvio Ecomo & DJ Chuckie) slowed down to 108 bpm. Since then, the phenomenon has developed a life of its own that transcends all geographical borders. It is no accident that the artists featured this evening come from such diverse areas as Vilnius, Malawi, Baltimore, Stockholm, Washington and Munich.

The Very Best is a fertile collaboration between Johan Hugo, one half of the Swedish duo Radioclit which rose to prominence as a fore-runner of the “Tropical Bass” wave and the Londoner with Malawian roots, Esau Mwamwaya. Esau’s crystal-clear voice is the trade mark of their collaborative remixes (including M.I.A., Santigold) and hit singles.

Schlachthofbronx No musical direction is taboo and this Munich-based duo of Bene and Jakob alias Schlachthofbronx have no shame when they start up their machines. From Kuduro to Cumbia, from in-your-face Rap to Bavarian brass band music – there is room for everything in their legendary live sets. And of course, the two are masters of the drawling groove dialect of Moombahton.

Zuzuka Poderosa & Jen Lasher These two vocalists are regular features of Nadastrom’s productions. Zuzuka Poderosa’s music is heavily influenced by Brazilian Funk, a melting pot she simply calls “Carioca Bass” and which harmonizes perfectly with the vibrations of Moombahton. In this summit of unfolding female power, she now meets Jen Lasher, a rapper, vocalist and DJ who is a regular presence at Nadastrom’s Moombahton Massive Nights.

DJs Boyfriend & Discgraceland The evening’s opening set is shared by the DJs Boyfriend and Discgraceland. Boyfriend, from Vilnius, started the first “tropical” club nights in Lithuania. His “Vodka House EP” just came out on Dave Nada’s label Diabluma Sound. John Stanhope alias Disgraceland is the co-founder of the British Moombahton label Scold Recordings, but he has also released a number of his Techno-inspired productions on Diabluma.

DJs Nadastrom & Sabo Few people can lay claim to having created their own sound: Dave Nada is one of them. As “Nadastrom”, he and his label and DJ partner Matt Nordstrom have played defining roles in the history of Moombahton. To round off the evening, Nadastrom meets up back to back with Sabo, a kindred spirit and DJ from Los Angeles, whose remixes and mash-ups regularly supply ammunition to DJs infected with the Moombahton virus.
