Valerie Smith is head of the division of visual arts, film and digital media in the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. In the 1980s she was head curator of the Artist Space in New York. She went on to become director of Sonsbeek 93 in the Dutch city of Arnheim and exhibition manager of the Queens Museum of Art, New York. In the HKW, she initiated Labor Berlin, a platform for international artists working in Berlin. She has published and edited numerous publications, including “Juan Downey: The Invisible Architect“ (2011).
