Chocó

D: Jhonny Hendrix Hinestroza

Feature, Columbia 2011, 80 min, English subtitles

“There’s nothing for free here“, says the shop owner to Chocó (played by the beautiful Karent Hinestroza). Chocó has lost her job in the gold mine while her husband the marimba player has gambled away all their money and she desperately wants to get hold of the birthday cake she has promised her daughter. “If you want cake, I want you“. But revenge is best enjoyed hot in this homage to female strength and will to survive. Director Hinestroza’s debut feature film tells of an Afro-Cuban community on the Caribbean coast and songs about desperation and hope.
