Zanzibar Musical Club

Documentary, France / Germany 2009, 85 min, Swahili with German subtitles

The aspiring accordion player, the 17-year-old Belina, wanders the musical world of Zanzibar in search of inspiration. She comes across a variety of new influences: Arab sounds, Latin American rhythms, Indian melodies, African drumbeats. She meets Bi Kidude, the living legend of Taarab, who introduces her to coming-of-age music for girls, called "Unyago". She meets Belina Amina, whose voice rings out from every radio in East Africa. And she gets to know the best Taarab musician of them all: the singer Makame Faki, who is also appearing in concert at WASSERMUSIK, along with the virtuoso intrumentalists of the Culture Musical Club of Zanzibar.
